章節(jié)摘錄
版權(quán)頁(yè):插圖:This is Kawagebo Peak. Kawagebo and the other surrounding peaks are jointlynamed the Thirteen Taizi (Prince) Peaks. Kawagebo, at an elevation of 6,740 meters, isthe highest peak in Yunnan. It is not only the heart of the Three Parallel Rivers Area, butalso the core of the Meili Scenic Region. Kawagebo Peak is regarded as the patrondeity of local Tibetans, and considered sacred to Tibetan Buddhism. According tolocal legend, the peak was originally a demon with nine heads and eighteen arms.Influenced by the Buddha's teachings, he became a Tibetan god who helped local peopledrive away evil spirits, and a guardian of the Thirteen Taizi Peaks.Kawagebo Peak today remains mysterious and elusive to most visitors. It's one of the virgin summits in the world, and is constantly covered in thick cloud andfog, with frequent avalanches and storms. Many teams of climbers have failed toscale this mountain. It is very difficult to climb to the top due to its unpredictableweather. In January 1991, all of the Chinese and Japanese mountaineers on an expedition fell off this mountain, without any of their remains found until six years later.
