　　本書共分兩冊，每冊包括十六個單元，每單元包括四篇課文，每篇課文后面都編有練習(xí)，并附有練習(xí)答案和詞匯表。這是本書的第一冊，適用于大學(xué)非英語專業(yè)一年級學(xué)生的水平。 　　本書的最大特點是取材新老兼顧，題材多樣，知識性強，語言地道，兼顧趣味性和廣泛性。置身其中，你既可以領(lǐng)略光怪陸離的尼斯湖的神秘，又可以追溯風(fēng)靡一時的“博克”的來源；既可以學(xué)習(xí)名人的成功之道，又可以了解各國有關(guān)數(shù)字的迷信…… 　　本書的另一特點是練習(xí)的針對性強且全面合理。每課的練習(xí)都分為兩大部分。第一部分為理解練習(xí)（Comprehension Exercises），其中包括根據(jù)短文回答問題、英譯漢（文中的關(guān)鍵句和難句）、漢譯英（練習(xí)文中出現(xiàn)的重點詞匯或短語）等三種形式。第二部分為詞匯練習(xí)（Vocabulary Exercises），其中包括易混詞、多義詞以及構(gòu)詞法練習(xí)。
