本書在闡述英語詞法和句法時,從傳統(tǒng)語法和當(dāng)代語法兩個角度進(jìn)行了對比。眾所周知,英語傳統(tǒng)語法已有兩千多年的歷史,定義、規(guī)則和例證通俗易懂,為英語教學(xué)作出了巨大貢獻(xiàn),同時也為其他語法流派的確立奠定了基礎(chǔ),功績顯赫。但隨著語言的發(fā)展和人們認(rèn)識的提高,傳統(tǒng)語法存在的問題顯得越來越突出,因?yàn)樗且岳≌Z法體系為藍(lán)本,正誤不以大多數(shù)人的口語為準(zhǔn),而以書面語為準(zhǔn),不統(tǒng)一、不嚴(yán)謹(jǐn),有的的現(xiàn)象進(jìn)有發(fā)生。本書在論述傳統(tǒng)語法的優(yōu)點(diǎn)和存在的問題的同時,著重論述了英語理論語法及其在教學(xué)中的應(yīng)用。例如,轉(zhuǎn)換-生成語法與系統(tǒng)功能語法之間存在著內(nèi)在的差別。以轉(zhuǎn)換生成語法為代表的形式語言學(xué)是從個體內(nèi)部的角度來研究語言的,即從個體的心理和生理的角度來研究大腦的活動機(jī)制,以此發(fā)現(xiàn)個體是如何運(yùn)用天賦的語言能力生成無限的合乎語法規(guī)則的句子的。這種語法所關(guān)注的首要問題是語法結(jié)構(gòu)的形式及其相互關(guān)系,而不是它們在不同語境中的意義和使用問題。系統(tǒng)功能語法把語言看作是一個交際系統(tǒng),語法分析的目的在于發(fā)現(xiàn)語法是通過怎樣的組織結(jié)構(gòu)來是語言使用者進(jìn)行意義的構(gòu)建和交換的。因此,這種語法所關(guān)注的首要問題是語法結(jié)構(gòu)和結(jié)構(gòu)成分的功能及其在語境中的意義。
