內(nèi)容概要
The term "waltz" conjures up favorite romantic melodies by Chopin or Johann Strauss. But the waltzes of those two composers represent only the smallest sampling of the riches enjoyed by lovers of the dance sensation that originated around 1800, dominated Europe at the turn of the twentieth century, and has remained popular to the present day. This collection offers pianists on all levels an inexpensive and convenient single-volume compilation of waltzes in a variety of moods from such diverse composers as Bart6k, Beethoven, Debussy, Faure, Grieg, Hindemith, Schubert, Scriabin, and Tchaikovsky. Highlights include Weber's 1819 "Invitation to the Dance," a brilliant arrangement of contrasting waltz themes; Dvorak's 1880 Waltz in E-flat, Op. 54, No. 8, which adds Czech overtones to the dance form; ragtime renditions by Harry P. Guy and Scott Joplin; and an elegiac Valse by the youthful Billy Stray horn, written before he discovered his jazz voice. Original Dover (2004) publication. Selected and with an introduction by Joseph Smith. 128pp. 9 x 12. Paperbound. 作者簡(jiǎn)介: The New York Times called pianist Joseph Smith's playing "eloquent," and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung found him a "richly sensitive interpreter." Mr. Smith has brought many little-known piano pieces to the attention of the public through performances, broadcasts, record-ings, articles, anthologies, and lectures. Smith is author of Piano Discoveries (Ekay Music), and editor of Four Early 20th Century Piano Suites by American Piano Classics, Country Black Composers (G. Schirmer), Gardens and Other Works by Grainger, and Tangos, Milongas and Other Latin-American Dances (Dover). His articles on piano music have appeared in major periodi-cals, and his feature "Joseph Smith's Piano Bench" was heard monthly on National Public Radio's Performance Today for two years. Mr. Smith has recorded many of the waltzes on this anthology for a new CD, Piano Waltzes from Beethoven to Poulenc, soon to be released on the Brioso label (BtlI 42).
