前言

English names are used in the English-speaking world: the UnitedStates, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and manyother regions. With the ever-increasing popularity and prevalence ofEnglish language around the world, English names, mainly first names,are also adopted in non-English-speaking countries like China. Whileselecting preferential English names, Chinese people often make use ofhomophonies, which sound like their given names in Chinese though dif-fer in meanings to a considerable extent in most cases. If we know someetymological, especially the semantically implied aspects of the targetnames, we may get our desirable English names as expected. With ad-mirable names, we are likely to be treated as we wish to, especially whenour names serve as our symbolic identity without our physical presencein various circumstances.
