Their first daughter, Joan, was born in September 1558 (the same year thather father became one of Stratford's four constables - a profession depicted withmuch humour in Measure for Measure and Much Ado About Nothing), but she was todie in her infancy. A second daughter, Margaret, was born four years later, but diedin 1563. Their third child and first son, William, was born in 1564 and was to provemore robust. He needed to be, for on 11 July 1564 the plague struck Stratford, claiming almost 200 victims. As with many details of the playwright's life, the precise date of his birth isfiercely contested. Church records reveal that he was baptised on 26 April 1564 andtradition has it'that his birthday must fall on 23 April - conveniently St George's Day,the patron saint of England. But if one allows that children were generally baptisedthree days after birth, it is possible that he was actually born on 24 April 1564.
《威廉·莎士比亞》:Almost four hundred years after his death, phenomenal interest inShakespeare's life and work persists. The breadth of his intellect, the theatri-cality of his plays, the beauty of his poetry, and the precision of his languageare among the many positive reasons for this. The image of Shakespearedepicted by Martin Droeshout on the title-page of the First Folio of his playsis one of the most distinctive and widely recognised portraits of a literaryfigure anywhere. Yet Shakespeare himself is often held to be an enigma-theusual facets of biographical accounts, such as what he liked to eat, or whetherhe knew Queen Elizabeth I are irretrievably missing. The lack of substantial evidence for some crucial aspects of Shakespeare's lifemay serve further to enhance&is mystique. But as Dominic Shellard shows inthis lively and fluent account, by viewmg the playwright in the context ofcontemporary Elizabethan politics and the business of the theatre, we knowmore of his existence than is often generally thought, providing a back-ground against which Shakespeare'sliterary output can be assessed.
