章節(jié)摘錄
PrehistoryBritish bestsellerism is rooted in different cultural andcommereial subsoil from Amerieas. Britain has always preserved ahigher retail cost for new books: protected formally, for a hundredyears after the 1890s, by the NBA. Educational and class systemshave been other differentiating factors.None the less, one perceives the same large shapes. One-offbestsellers, those that sell fastest, tend to be short-lived. Andthere is a polarity between these solo, short-life blockbustersand bestselling lines of fiction to which habituated readers aregenre-loyal, often over many years. There were bestsellers before bestseller lists, just as there werenovels before that term came into use. Samuel Riehardsonsenthusiastic admirers (Pamela-ites) prefigure innumerablesubsequent enthusiasms. From the first, one sees cult practicesclustered around wildly popular works of fiction, such as GoethesThe Sorrows of Young Werther (1742; canary-yellow trousers andan epidemic of adolescent suicide), Bulwers Pelham (1828; darksuits and Byronic scowls for men), or du Mauriers Trilby (1894;the ever popular felt hat).
