內(nèi)容概要

這套學(xué)習叢書按文學(xué)類別粗略劃分，共有七種：《英美詩歌選讀》，《英美短篇小說選讀》，《英美長篇小說選讀》，《英美戲劇選讀》，《英美散文選讀》，《英美演講詞選讀》以及《英美文論選讀》。之所以把每本書定名為選讀，是因為這樣更符合中國英語讀者群的現(xiàn)實需要，更容易為廣大英語師生接受，更有編寫價值和學(xué)習價值?！　”緟矔帉憰r以可讀性、實用性、代表性和經(jīng)典性為選目標準，以高校英語師生為主要對象，兼顧社會上普通英語愛好者，所選篇目具備作者簡介、原文、注釋、賞析和思考題五項。其中，思考題一項極為重要，因為學(xué)而思之，收獲始至?？鬃釉疲骸皩W(xué)而不思則罔?！彼?，在每一篇目后均安排了幾個與原文相關(guān)的頗能引人深思的問題。這些思考題雖然為數(shù)不多，所占篇幅又少；但由于國內(nèi)大多數(shù)選讀類書籍中缺此一項，因而它們構(gòu)成了該學(xué)習叢書的一大特色。為了方便自學(xué)和比較英漢語言妙趣，在詩歌選文后附有譯詩。譯詩基本出自國內(nèi)名家之手，均為在多種譯本中精挑細選出的上品。

　　So the next night, after midnight, four men crossed Miss Emily slawn and slunk about the house like burglars, sniffing along the baseof the brickwork and at the cellar openings while one of them per-formed a regular sowing motion with his hand out of a sack slung fromhis shoulder. They broke open the cellar door and sprinkled limethere, and in all the outbuildings. As they re-crossed the lawn, awindow that had been dark was lighted and Miss Emily sat in it, thelight behind her, and her upright torso motionless as that of an idol.They crept quietly across the lawn and into the shadow of the locuststhat lined the street. After a week or two the smell went away.　　That was when people had begun to feel really sorry for her. Peo-ple in our town, remembering how old lady Wyatt, her great-aunt,had gone completely crazy at last, believed that the Griersons heldthemselves a little too high for what they really were. None of theyoung men were quite good enough for Miss Emily and such. We hadlong thought of them as a tableau,　Miss Emily a slender figure inwhite in the background, her father a spraddled silhouette in theforeground, his back to her and clutching a horsewhip, the two ofthem framed by the back-flung front door. So when she got to bethirty and was still single, we were not pleased exactly, but vindica-ted ;even with insanity in the family she wouldnt have turned downall of her chances if they had really materialized.
