章節(jié)摘錄
Professor:So those are the major types of rivers in theworld. Now,as you may be swam, many rivers form deltasat their mouths. Our Mississippi River forms one of the mostrecognizable deltas in the world. The term“delta”was coinedby the Greek historian Herodctus because the shape of thedelta of the Nile River in Egypt is shaped like the Greek letterdelta. The Amazon River has the largest delta in the world, and the Yellow River[n China has the greatest sediment flow, which is very important in delta formation Sediment flow is what creatas a delta Rock is eroded bywind and water, and many of the eroded parts end up[nthe water system st some point and, eventually,in the greatrivers of the world As a river moves towsrd the ocean or alarge lake.it picks up this eroded dirt and sand When theriver reaches a large body of water, the force of the riverslows.and the sediment is deposited. The finer particlesare carried farther from the shore.and the coarser ones areheavier and fa¨to the seabed first. Thus you have a gentlestope underwater, with the heavy buildup near the rivermouth and gradually sloping down the further out it goesAs the delta grows outward, the different types of materialform layers on top of each other.Often at the bosom of thedelta there is mud, with silt on top, then fine sand, and finallycoarser sand on top.
