本書(shū)選取了英國(guó)16世紀(jì)文藝復(fù)興時(shí)期到20世紀(jì)后現(xiàn)代主義時(shí)期的18位經(jīng)典作家及其經(jīng)典作品。作家作品的編選以反映英國(guó)文學(xué)思潮的歷史發(fā)展脈絡(luò)為核心，貫穿英國(guó)文學(xué)史中的人文主義—玄學(xué)詩(shī)派—現(xiàn)實(shí)主義—新古典主義—感傷主義—(前)浪漫主義—批判現(xiàn)實(shí)主義—喜劇獨(dú)白—唯美主義—現(xiàn)代主義—后現(xiàn)代主義的發(fā)展主線。從每種文學(xué)思潮中選取一位代表性作家，按照相關(guān)文學(xué)背景知識(shí)——作家生平簡(jiǎn)單介紹——作品導(dǎo)讀——作品選讀——選讀注釋——課后討論題的體例進(jìn)行編寫(xiě)，目的是讓讀者通過(guò)具體的作品來(lái)歷史地觀照當(dāng)時(shí)的文學(xué)思潮，同時(shí)又能夠把作家作品納入當(dāng)時(shí)的文學(xué)思潮來(lái)閱讀，更加精深、透徹地把握和理解作家作品。

　　Secondly， The poorer tenants will have something valuable of their own，which by law may be made liable to distress and help to pay their landlord's rent，their corn and cattle being already seized， and money a thing unknown. Thirdly， Whereas the maintenance of an hundred thousand children， from twoyears old and upward， cannot be computed at less than ten shillings a-piece perannum， the nation's stock will be thereby increased fifty thousand pounds perannum， beside the profit of a new dish introduced to the tables of all gentlemen offortune in the kingdom who have any refinement in taste. And the money willcirculate among ourselves， the goods being entirely of our own growth andmanufacture. Fourthly， The constant breeders， beside the gain of eight shillings sterling perannum by the sale of their children， will be rid of the charge of maintaining themafter the first year. Fifthly， This food would likewise bring great custom to taverns； where thevintners will certainly be so prudent as to procure the best receipts for dressing it toperfection，and consequently have their houses frequented by all the finegentlemen， who justly value themselves upon their knowledge in good eating: anda skilful cook， who understands how to oblige his guests， will contrive to make itas expensive as they please.　　……
