　　3. The Mysterious Gypsies'　　Gypsies or Gipsies are an interesting ethnic group of people who live in Europe, the Balkan Peninsula, the Mid East, North Africa, and the Americas. They have been badly treated and discriminated against for hundreds of years because of their culture and beliefs. Many people think that they are witches and use magic to do bad things. Others think that they are criminals who steal and kill. These wrong opinions of Gypsies are simply because most people know very little about them.　　Although many people call them "gypsies", they are also known as Romanies, Roma people, or Roma. The name "Gypsy" was invented by Europeans, who wrongly believed that the Roma came from Egypt.　　It is believed that the Roma originated in the northern part ofthe Indian sub-continent. About 1,000 years ago, they began to migrate via the Iranian plateau. As they moved through the Middle East and Europe, they mixed with the local people. There are now about 9 million Roma in Europe and at least15 million in the world.　　……
