前言
《伊索寓言》——一個何等響亮的書名!在所有古希臘作家中,最為人知的也許是伊索,其聲譽之隆甚至超過了荷馬。具有諷刺意味的是,伊索縱然享有盛名。涉及其作品和身世的確切資料卻十分匱乏,而且此前尚無一部完整的《伊索寓言》英譯本面世。伊索頗有幾分像電影明星.可謂婦孺皆知.唯所了解者僅止于他扮演的若干角色。伊索在兒童心目中始終扮演一個故事大王的角色,流行于維多利亞時代的諸如“欲速則不達”、“驕矜者必敗”一類的格言都歸于他的名下.而實際上在伊索寓言里從未出現(xiàn)過此類格言。迄今為止,父母仍然熱衷于把動物故事書買來當做生日禮物送給孩子,只是書中的故事和真正的伊索寓言幾無相同之處。每當我提及“真正的伊索”,總覺得遲疑不決,因為人們對歷史上的伊索所知甚微,以至有人認為世上本無伊索其人。 然而。有跡象表明,伊索其人并非子虛烏有。早于柏拉圖時代出現(xiàn)的《伊索寓言》一書,雖說內容多半是向壁虛構的片斷軼聞,但經過嚴肅的學者亞里士多德及其門人的一番去偽存真的考辨,得出與時人看法相左的結論:伊索并非小亞細亞的弗里吉亞人氏,而是色雷斯一個名為梅森布列亞的小鎮(zhèn)上的居民。他曾在薩摩斯島上住過一段時日(參見亞里士多德佚作《薩摩斯地方志》的殘篇)。
