章節(jié)摘錄
circumstances, Michael has significantly influenced the person I have become. Inschool he strives for excellence and achieves it. He has a unique abil-ity to relate to people. He is committed, driven and self-confident.Emotionally, he is the strongest person I know. These are qualities thatI also see in myself. Just as I appreciate Michaels qualities, he appre-ciates mine; when I asked Michael for three words to describe me, hisanswers were "loyal, driven and optimistic." I am committed to givingrespect to those who are entitled to it, such as my parents, teachers andcoaches. My friends and teammates are extremely important to me. Mydrive, self-confidence and willingness to chance failure have allowedme to take on challenges others might not consider. These challengesdefine my life by constantly providing inspiration. I try to live my lifeaccording to a Japanese proverb: "Fall seven times, stand up eight."Lastly, I have always been an optimist, and I love to laugh. My friendsand family marvel at my jovial nature. Many times my family had con-sidered placing me on a respirator after hearing me erupt in laughter ata Dave Barry book or an episode of The Simpsons. Last year, Michael told me he was gay. I was dumbfounded. Lookingback, I realized that I had failed to notice emerging signs of his sexu-ality. I wondered how I, his best friend, could have failed to see them.Friends had approached me and asked if Michael was gay. My answerwas always, "Of course not!"
