Passage A Meridians and Collaterals The meridians and collaterals are distributed a1]over the human body,Linking the interi-or Zang-fu organs to the various tissues and organs of the super portion of the body to makethe body an organic integrity, and transporting Qi and blood in order to nourish the wholebody. In the network of the meridians and collaterals, the meridians are the main trunks thatpertain to the respective Zang-fu organs, while the collaterals are their minor branches dis-tributed over the entire body. The system of meridians and collaterals mainly consists of the twelve regular meridians, the eight extra meridians and the fifteen collaterals. The twelve regular meridians, togetherwith Ren meridian and Du meridian of the eight extra meridians form the fourteen meridians, along each of which are points for applying acupuncture and moxibustion. The complete name of each of the twelve regular meridians is composed of three parts:(1)hand or foot,(2)Yin or rang(Yin is further divided into Taiyin,Shaoyin and Jueyin, and rang into Taiyang。Yangming and Shaoyang),and(3)a Zang or a Fu organ. The handor foot in the name of a meridian depends on whether the meridian goes mainly on the handor the foot’while Yin or Yang and a Zang or a Fu organ are determined by whether it takesits course along the medial or the lateral aspect of the 1imb’and which Zang or Fu organ it pertainsto。For instance, the meridian which goes mainly on the hand’runs along the medial aspect of theupper limb and pertains to the lung,is named the Lung meridian of Hand-Taiyin. The eight extra meridians are the Du,Ren,Chong,Dai,Yangqiao,Yinqiao Yangweiand Yinwei meridians.Their courses of distribution are different from those of the twelveregular meridians and they do not pertain to or connect with Zang-fu organs. Each of the names of the eight extra meridians conveys special meaning:Du means gov-erning;that is to say,the Du meridian has the function of governing all the Yang meridians。Ren means responsibility;that is,the Ren meridian is responsible for all the Yin meridians.Chong means vital;that is,the Chong meridian is a vital meridian communicating with allthe meridians.Dai is a girdle, which implies that the Dai meridian has the function of bindingup all the meridians. ……
