章節(jié)摘錄
We define ceramics as the art and science of making and using solid articles which have as their essential component, and are composed in large part of inorganic nonmetallic materials.∞ The definition includes not only materials such as pottery, porcelain, refractories, structural clay products, abrasives, porcelain enamels, cements, and glass, but also nonmetallic magnetic materials, such as ferroelectrics, manufactured single crystals,glass-ceramics,and a variety of other products which were not in existence until a few years ago and many which do not exist today. Our definition is broader than the art and science of making and using solid articles formed by the action of heat on earthy raw materials,an extension of the Greek word keramos, and is much broader than a common dictionary definition such as“pottery”or "earthenware”.Modern developments in methods of fabrication.the use of materials to close specifications, and their new and unique properties make traditional definitions too restrictive for our purposes. The origination of novel ceramic materials and new met hods of manufacture requires us to take a fundamental approach to the art and science and a broad view of the field. one important characteristic of the ceramic industry is that it is basic to the suceessful operation 0f many other industries. For example, refractories are a basic component of the metallurgical industry .Abrasives are essential to the machine-tool and automobile industries. Glass products are essential to the automobile industry as well as to the architectural, electronic。and electrical industries .Uranium oxide fuels are essential to the nuclear-power industrv. Cements are essential to the architectural and building industry. Various special electrical and magnetic ceramics are essentiaI to the development of computers and many other electronic devices. As a matter of fact, almost every industrial production line, office, and home is dependent on ceramic materials.Newly designed devices incorporate ceramic materials hecause of their useful chemical, electrical, mechanical, thermal, and structural properties.
