　　一種堅(jiān)硬和倔強(qiáng)。在這件事上，最終妥協(xié)的還是陳。他的陽(yáng)剛品質(zhì)遇到了陰柔卻強(qiáng)勢(shì)的麗麗，只有敗下陣來(lái)?！　×硪淮?，陳意識(shí)到陰陽(yáng)平衡的重要性是在對(duì)待兒子滿齊的教育問(wèn)題上。他看到孩子睜大的有些憂郁的眼睛時(shí)，決定要多花時(shí)間在兒子身上。他不能贊同妻子和她的姐姐梅對(duì)滿齊的女性影響?！八膊幌雰鹤臃挠谶@些女性影響。這對(duì)男孩沒(méi)有好處。陽(yáng)應(yīng)該平衡陰?！保?10）可是，麗麗對(duì)兒子的前途卻另有打算。她不辭辛苦，把滿齊送到中國(guó)城的一家華人學(xué)校，希望他學(xué)習(xí)傳統(tǒng)知識(shí)和一定的專業(yè)技能，將來(lái)能干一番大事業(yè)。但當(dāng)她得知陳悄悄地培養(yǎng)著兒子對(duì)園藝的興趣，在園子里種植芒果苗時(shí)，麗麗因父子情深而心生妒忌，進(jìn)而勃然大怒，將芒果苗連根拔起以泄其憤。　　深深植根于中國(guó)傳統(tǒng)文化的麗麗，在遠(yuǎn)隔萬(wàn)里的英國(guó)仍然堅(jiān)守著她心目中的陰陽(yáng)平衡。然而她的所作所為，卻恰恰違背了事物真正的陰陽(yáng)平衡。她每天溫柔地強(qiáng)迫湯足飯飽的陳喝下她精心準(zhǔn)備的肉湯，卻不知事實(shí)上這不啻是讓陳每天吃毒藥，使其體重激增。家里所有重要的決定都由麗麗一人做出，并付諸實(shí)施。身為一家之長(zhǎng)的陳沒(méi)有真正的話語(yǔ)權(quán)，到最后還被三合會(huì)控制，莫名其妙地消失。梅也搬了出去，另立門戶?！　∶枨鄬⑿≌f(shuō)標(biāo)題寫成“酸甜”，是對(duì)小說(shuō)中麗麗堅(jiān)持的陰陽(yáng)平衡理論的呼應(yīng)。在開(kāi)外賣餐廳時(shí)，他們的糖醋排骨是最受歡迎的一道菜。這道菜之所以受歡迎，是因?yàn)樗岷吞疬@兩種味道達(dá)到了最佳平衡，而這種酸甜的平衡似乎能有效地使身體達(dá)到某種平衡。然而在現(xiàn)實(shí)中，在中國(guó)文化與英國(guó)文化的碰撞中，麗麗一家并沒(méi)有能實(shí)現(xiàn)真正的平衡或和諧。家里只剩母子倆相依為命。家庭不止沒(méi)有內(nèi)在真正的平衡，連形式上的平衡也不復(fù)存在。雖然在小說(shuō)結(jié)尾處毛翔青出乎意料地安排了每月三合會(huì)以陳的名義寄回來(lái)的匯款，能干的麗麗也仍任勞任怨地經(jīng)營(yíng)著快餐店，他們的命運(yùn)卻讓人不無(wú)擔(dān)憂：身處異國(guó)卻活在自己的世界里的麗麗未來(lái)難以預(yù)料。也許只有年幼的滿齊是小說(shuō)的希望，廣闊的世界以全新的一切迎接著他。

Murphy ，s Professor of English at University of Central Florida. His research interests include Nature Oriented Literature， Contemporary Multicultural American Literature，Comparative Asian American and Asian Literatures， Modern American Poetry and Ecocriticism. His most recent book is Eeocritical Explorations in Literary and Cultural Studies.　　Douglas Tallack ，is Professor of American Studies， Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International) and Head of the College of Arts， Humanities and Law at the University of Leicester， UK. He has published seven books， most recently， Global Cities/Local Sites (co-edited，electronic book) and New York Sights： Visualizing Old and New New York. An Honorary Professor at both Tsinghua University and Shanghai International Studies University， Professor Tallack has made a great contribution to the academic exchanges between Chinese and British universities.
